Christy

"My name is Christy Riley. I live in rural Nevada and have been here for almost 13 years, married to my husband for 12 years. We have three children, Deston19, Jaycelynn 11 and LilyAnn 4.
Jaycelynn was diagnosed with Petit Mal Seizures when she was 7 at that time my husband and I decided that sending her back to school wasn't an option. She woke up so tired because she was having seizures in her sleep and we were afraid that school staff might not pay enough attention to her and would go into a seizure walking across the street. A driver of a car wouldn't know that she couldn't hear them or she would come out of a seizure and be completely confused, her safety back a huge concern. We are happy to report that Jaycelynn has been seizure free for 3 years now. She is enrolled with a virtual school that is a public school online.
Since her big sis was doing school work at home, LilyAnn wanted to do school work, too. She began her home schooling when she was 2 almost 3 and loves it. I give her time to do her painting which is her talent and now we are moving on from ABC's, counting to 15(getting closer to 20), spelling her name, and short 2 -5 letter words to adding, subtracting and putting sentences together.
Deston went through school basically being pushed through the system. From the time he started Pre-School I knew that he was dyslexic and no matter how many times I brought it to each of his teacher's attention, they dismissed it. Finally, his 6th grade resource teacher tested him and found that he has a form of Dyslexia that involves mixing up the middle part of big words, he gets the beginning and end but not the middle and can't seem to combine them into a whole word. Once in high school in CA, he finally got the help that we had been looking for, his reading teacher had him put cellophane sheets of different colors over the book pages he was reading. Each time he changed colors the teacher would pick out words and have him read it out loud, each color had a different result but now he can read with a yellow cellophane page over the page he is reading."

Education should be fun and with Story Time Felts, it makes learning fun!
1. Butterflies
-Children are fascinated by how these bugs and to learn how they
transform leaves them in awe.
2. Food
Guide Pyramid -My 11 year old actually choose this one because
she has to do a health class which this item teach children the
basic food groups, how much of each group should be consumed each
day, it isn't about counting calories but about how much is enough
and what a cup of broccoli looks like.
3.
Scripture Stories -This is one I chose since I remember my
mom using something similar when I was 10 or 11 to teach the kids
at Vacation Bible School. My children enjoy reading Bible stories
and this would make it a fun way to tell them and children tend
to remember more with visual learning than with just audio learning.
4. Deluxe
Toy Counter with CD -My 4 year old has asked about learning
how to add and with this set it would make it that much easier
for her to learn. I can give her the numbers, she can find them
and the visually see the number, how the problem looks in written
form, count to find the answer and she is being introduced to
word problems all at the same time. Most children struggle with
word problems but this would give them the knowledge they need
to pick out what numbers they need to get an answer.
5. Calendar
Set -Now I know that my 11 year old doesn't need this as much
as my 4 year old but she really thought it would be fun to be
able to change it each month, kind of like dress up! My 4 year
old is learning the days of the week and how to read a calendar
but this would make it fun and not so confusing. 5. |
Jessi
"HI! My name is Jessi and I am from rural south-central Kansas. I am a proud stay at home mom to two little ones. Alia (girl) is 4 and Britt (boy) is 3. This year we will begin an amazing new chapter in our lives, home schooling. We are very excited to start this journey, and are ready for the challenges that lay ahead. There will most certainly be rough waters to sail and dark days to endure, but with the Lord's guidance, all will go well. My husband and I know this is what the Lord has pressed upon our hearts, so we have complete faith He will lead us down the right path. We believe we know our children best, and can tailor their education to meet their needs and allow them to learn in a way that suits them personally."
My home schooling website (still being worked on, but mostly done) is Kansas Kountry.

1. As a home schooling parent I would choose the Scripture
Stories Bible Set because our curriculum is bible based. This
would be a great way to put visuals along with each lesson plan.
Younger children seem to grasp concepts better when they can see
and touch a visual aid when explaining the lesson.
2. Next, I would choose the Calendar
Set because I really think that learning all about the calendar
is one of the most basic and most important things a child can
learn at an early age.
3. I would also choose the Toy
Counter Math Set because it teaches many aspects of early
learning concepts.
4. Then, I would choose the Bug
Quiet Book for a couple of different reasons. First off, both
of my kids love to learn about bugs. Since we live in the country,
there are plenty around, and they enjoy bringing them in the house.
With this, they could find and learn about the bugs (hopefully)
without bringing them in the house! Since my younger son has a
shorter attention span than his sister so he is always up about
halfway through a lesson. This would help to keep him occupied
while we finish our lesson. These quiet books would also be great
when we are out and about at church or appointments to help keep
the kids from acting up.
5. Last but not least, as a home schooling parent I would choose
the USA
Map because I really think my kids should start learning about
the land and country they live in as early as possible. We travel
quite a bit, so this would be a great instrument in learning and
studying the places we visit. |
